This spin on a referral program proved that Chipotle fans love sharing burritos as much as they love eating them. This program not only contributed to mobile subscriber growth (2.4 times higher than the previous year!), but also won Chipotle a 2017 Bronze Smarties Award from the Mobile Marketing Association (MMA) in the Marketing Strategy category for Excellence in Relationship Building / CRM. Chipotle is known both for their delicious, wholesome food, as well as their innovative, digital experiences. The Burrito-A-Friend program was no exception. A message was sent via SMS to their most loyal of fans, giving them the chance to send a personalized card to a single friend, and with that card, a coupon for a buy-one-get-one free burrito. The original fan received a reward in the form of free chips & salsa, making everyone happy.
